William "Bill" Hoium Obituary

Hoium, William Dean “Bill”, age 66, surrounded by love, passed away from cancer, despite his positive spirit and his heroic efforts to fight it.  Bill leaves behind his wife and best friend of 44 years, Paula; honorary son, Jonathon (Tosha); honorary grandchildren, Jaden, Riley, Landon, Bay; close friend, Bev; his loyal poodles, Morgan and Cooper and cat Jasper; brothers, Stan (Berni) Hoium, Donald Hoium, Mark (Doreen) Hoium; sisters, Judi (Ernie) Eggert, June (Don) Granander; many nieces, nephews, Paula’s family who in his eyes were also his brothers and sisters: Pam (Gary) Dahlberg, Mike (Mona) Norton, Kathy (LeRoy) McKeown, Diane (Jerry) Firkus, Dan (Kelly) Norton and many more nieces and nephews.

Bill was born in Canby MN to Erma and Oscar Hoium on May 7, 1957 and spent his childhood and attended school in Marietta MN.  Bill met the love of his life, Paula and married her on July 1, 1978.  Over the years, Paula and Bill shared many adventures: traveling, family events, motorcycling, gardening and enjoying the antics of their pets.

Bill tried multiple careers including correctional officer, a dispatcher and jailer for Mille Lacs County, before finding his passion working with law enforcement as a MN highway patrol radio communications operator.  Bill’s easy-going friendly personality, calmness and sense of humor matched well with his role and blessed him with many loyal friends over the years.  Bill loved people and helping where he could.

Bill will be missed for his great smile, his snappy come-backs, his big heart and teddy bear hugs.  He made everyone feel special by enveloping them in security and calm and then something funny to lighten the mood.  Nothing was more fun for Bill than creatively planning jokes, Halloween costumes with the intention of shocking and making everyone around him laugh.

He was preceded in death by his mother and father; brother, Larry; nephews, Patrick and Joe Hoium; mother-in-law, Erma Norton; father-in-law, James Norton; and his many dogs.

Love and gratitude in our hearts, please join us in celebrating and honoring Bill on June 11th at 2 PM at Dare Funeral Home 805 Main St NW Elk River, MN, with visitation 2 hours prior, starting at 12 PM. Light luncheon to follow at McPete’s Sports Bar & Lanes 590 Humboldt Dr Big Lake, MN
