Thomas "Tom" Winfield Hipsag

Tom Hipsag passed away on Thursday, August 21, 2025. He was preceded in death by his parents, Frank “Fitz” Hipsag and Winifred “Dolly” Rush; sister, Linda; brother, Danny; and grandson, Jacob.

Tom grew up in Elk River, one of ten children.  He joined the U.S. Marine Corps in December 1959. He was honorably discharged in July 1963. In June of 1961, he met the love of his life, Marlys. They married in June 1964 to begin building a lifetime of memories together of raising their family and building their home.

Tom began his career at Federal Cartridge, where he worked for 15 years. Following that, he ventured out on his own and founded T.W. Hipsag Electric. Over the years, he not only built a successful business but mentored many young people in the trade. He “retired” in 2006, though he could often be found back at the shop lending a hand.

Beyond work, Tom enjoyed traveling, fishing, woodworking, and tackling home improvement projects—whether at his own home, his children’s homes, or his church. In his younger years, he often helped his father on the farm, and throughout his life, he was always ready to lend a hand to others. 

He was so loved and will be missed by many.

Tom survived by his beloved wife of 61 years, Marlys; daughters, Yvonne (Joe) Kirkeide and Mary Kay (Tom) Steinke; sons, Brian (Stacy) Hipsag and Mark (Tonya) Hipsag; 12 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren: and 7 siblings.

Memorial Mass of Christian Burial at 11AM, Friday, August 29, 2025. Visitation 9:30 AM until 11:00AM at Church of Saint Andrew, 566 - 4th St. NW., Elk River, MN. Interment to follow with full military honors at Saint Andrews Cemetery, Elk River. Lunch will be served at church after the interment. Arrangements have been entrusted to Dare's Funeral Home ~ Elk River.
