Russell Anderson Obituary

Russell Anderson, long time Elk River resident died peacefully at the VA Hospice Unit in St. Cloud on January 7, 2024.  He was preceded in death by his father Guy, his mother Dorothy (Erickson) and his brothers Bob and Doug. He was also preceded by Dorothy’s second husband Walter Meyer and his son, Bob.

He is survived by his wife Anna Mae (Praught); children Dennis (Lorie); Fr. Kevin; Cliff (Julie); Mary Alice (Greg Hohlen); George (Dawn); Guy; Peter (Ginny Marvin); brothers Loren; Dick (Pat), Dave (Mary), Gordy Meyer (Linda); 16 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren.

Russ was born on August 9, 1932. He grew up in Elk River where he was football captain and Homecoming King for his graduating class of 1950. He served in the Army as a tank commander in the Korean War. He married his high school sweetheart and Homecoming Queen, Anna Mae Praught on August 11, 1951.

Russ worked for the Elk River Municipal for 13 years then went on to own Anderson Carpet Service for 25 until he became the first full-time fire chief of Elk River Fire Department, following years of service as a volunteer fire chief and fire fighter.  His total years in the ERFD was 37 years.  Russ was a member of the Elk River American Legion and member of their Color Guard.

He loved to hunt, especially at the family deer shack in Fourtown, north of Red Lake, MN.  He and Anna Mae loved to fish, travel, play cards and spend time with family.

The Memorial Mass will be held at St. Andrew’s Catholic Church in Elk River on Saturday, February 17, at 11am.  Reviewal at 10:00am. Service may be viewed by accessing the link below.
