Richard (Dick) John Hetland

January 18, 1942 – July 20, 2023

Dick Hetland passed away at age 81 on July 20, 2023, with his wife, Vonnie, at his side.

Dick was born in Minneapolis and embraced MN his entire life. His passion included anything to do with the outdoors along with gardening and keeping a well-groomed yard. He was an avid hunter (rabbit, turtle, deer, raccoon, bear and bobcat), enjoyed boating, skiing and cabin time. Community involvement and sharing God’s word to others was his gift. A true classic car admirer and he cherished his 1958 Edsel.

Entrepreneurship and starting his own businesses were second nature to him; Dick’s Lawn/Sanitation Service Inc. (1962), Brooklyn Recycling Center (1977) and Elk River Recycling (1995).  “Recycle today for tomorrow’s use!” He was a professional, hard-working man. He was always planning and thinking of how to improve things, we witnessed this continuously, even in the most recent months.

Dick and Vonnie enjoyed spending time with family and attending as many events as the calendar would allow to watch their kids/grandkids. Gathering with friends and neighbors to play a competitive game of Canasta was his favorite.

Preceded in death by his parents; sister, Cathy Halford; Brother-in-Law, Bruce (Rocky) Hanson; and nephew, Tom Halford.

Survived by his wife, Vonnie Hetland; children, Renee (Brian) Shimley, Kristen Hetland, Bret (Becci) Brown, Daunette (Scott) Throolin, Cindi (Rich) Spratt; many grandchildren; great-grandchildren; sisters, Shirley Hanson, Judy Raffensparger; Brother-in-Law, Jerry Halford; nieces and nephews.

Sunday, July 30, 2023. Visitation 2:30 - 3:30 pm, Service 3:30 pm and refreshments to follow.
