Paul H. Mockenhaupt
May 12, 1940 ~ May 13, 2021 (age 81)
Age 81, of Elk River (formerly of 6th Crow Wing Lake-Nevis, MN). Passed away peacefully at his home on May 13, 2021 surrounded by his family.
He is preceded in death by his daughter, Jody; parents, Hubert and Joan (Hunstinger) Mockenhaupt; brothers, Robert and Jerold Mockenhaupt.
Paul is survived by his wife of 34+ years, Helen; children, David (Michael), Daniel (LeAnne), David Gerber, Timothy (Tammy) Gerber, Anita (William) Culp and Kelly Gerber; grandchildren, Joshua, Derek, Leah, Jenna, Nicholas, Justin, Jordan, Taylor, Andrew and Adam; many great-grandchildren; sister, Carol (Dale) Mossey; nieces, nephews, other family and friends.
Paul grew up in St. Cloud, MN and graduated from Catherdral High School in 1958. He graduated from Northwest Technical Institute in St. Louis with a drafting and design major. Paul served with the U.S. Marine Corps from 1958-1962 as President’s helicopter crew chief at the White House.
During his tenure with the White House service, he flew many times with both Presidents Eisenhower and Kennedy, as well as Richard Nixon and Lyndon Johnson when they were Vice Presidents. Many other diplomats and dignitaries flew in his ship. The duty took the E-4 Marine (Corporal) to some 37 countries around the world. Paul was decorated with a White House Service Certificate for honorable duty signed by President Eisenhower. He was stationed at HMX-1, MCAS, Quantico, Virginia. Once discharged he spent some time in the Marine Reserves and became a member of the American Legion Post in Hackensack, MN.
In 1996, Paul retired from a 29 year career at Cummin-Onan Corporation where he was a technical writer, illustrator and editor of Publications. He retired to his lake home on 6th Crow Wing Lake in Nevis, MN. He enjoyed fishing, gardening, playing horseshoes and kept busy writing for the Lake Association newspaper.
Mass of Christian burial at 10:30AM on Tues, May 25, 2021 at the Church of St Andrew, 566-4th St NW, Elk River.
Interment Minnesota State Veterans Cemetery, Little Falls, Minnesota.
