Leonard Nelson Obituary

Leonard Thomas Nelson, age 95, passed away March 29, 2024 after a long and well lived life.  He was born February 6, 1929 to Orlando and Marie (Buraglio) Nelson in Duluth, MN.

After graduating from Duluth Central High School, he enlisted in the US Army where he proudly served our country.   He married Mary Ellen Rooney on June 30, 1951 and celebrated 54 years of marriage until her passing in 2005.

Leonard retired after 30+ years from US Steel as a machinist and retired a second time from the St. Louis County District Court where he served as a bailiff.  Additionally, he was appointed District Director of the US Census In 1980.   He was a proud member and former treasurer of the Italian American Club in Duluth where he also played in a Bocce league. 

He was an avid gardener and enjoyed working in his shop repairing things.  He spent his spare time reading, doing crossword puzzles, playing cribbage, watching sports and spending time with his family.

He is preceded in death by his wife Mary Ellen, parents, sister Phyllis Royer, and son-in-law Paul Crane.

He is survived by his partner, Shirley Novack; children Stephen (Joan Bren) Nelson, Lynn (David) Stringer, Susan Crane, Laurie (Gene) Whitbeck, and Richard (Brenda) Nelson; grandchildren Andrea LaPlante, Renae LaPlante, Kirstin Whitbeck and Bryan Whitbeck; great-grandchildren Maria Johnson, Zachary, Evan, and Nathan LaPlante; brother John (Suzanne) Nelson.

Funeral mass will take place at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church – Duluth on April 20, 2024.  Visitation 10 am with mass at 11am.  Father John Petrich will preside.

In lieu of flowers, donations to the American Diabetes Association would be appreciated.
