John passed away on 3/1/2026. He was born in Minneapolis on September 14, 1932 to John and Marie (Cieslak) Tokar, attended St. Cyril’s church and school and graduated from Vocational High School.
John joined the U.S. Navy and was proud to have served our country during the Korean War on the U.S.S. Point Cruz.
After serving in the Navy, he returned home and soon met the love of his life, Virginia Johnson, with a chance meeting at the Minneapolis Aquatennial while a member of the Drum and Bugle Corp. John and Virginia celebrated 69 years of marriage last December.
John retired from the City of Minneapolis where he worked as a Heavy Equipment operator and was a member of the Operating Engineers (‘a 49er’).
John faithfully attended church, was proud of his family legacy, his roots in northeast Minneapolis and of his Polish and Slovak heritage.
John is survived by his wife, Virginia; children, Michael (Jean), Mark (Barbara), Douglas (Jane) and Kathryn; grandchildren, Nicholas, Joshua, David, Robert, Kacie, Alex, Beth, Paul, Jordan, and Jason; 14 great-grandchildren.
John can now spend time in eternity with his creator, the Heavenly Father ‘Where there will be no more death, or mourning or crying or pain’ (Rev 21:4).
John is preceded in death by his father, John; mother, Marie; siblings, Gladys, Dorothy, Lorraine, Marie, and Edward.
Mass of Christian burial at 12:30 PM on Tuesday, March 10, 2026 at the Church of St. Andrew, 566-4th St NW, Elk River, with visitation starting at 11:30 AM.
Interment Fort Snelling National Cemetery in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
