Joan Clare (Rietman) Mordal

Joan Clare Mordal, age 86 of Elk River, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by her loving family on Monday, June 1, 2026. She was born November 17, 1939 in San Diego, CA to Kenneth and Clara (Nelson) Rietman.

Joan graduated from Elk River High School in 1957 and furthered her education at St. Cloud State University. She was a dedicated elementary teacher for 35 years, teaching at Lincoln Elementary in Anoka, Parker Elementary in Elk River and Meadowvale Elementary. After retirement, Joan greatly enjoyed working with NAEP, allowing her to travel to many areas.

On February 26, 1960, Joan married Duane Mordal.

She was a faithful member of Living Waters Church. She was active with many fundraisers and taught Sunday school for many years.

Joan enjoyed her cats, knitting, camping, traveling to Hawaii, and greatly enjoyed socializing with family and friends.

She is preceded in death by her son, James Mordal; grandson, Matthew Mordal; parents, Kenneth and Clara Rietman; and brother, Thomas Rietman.

Joan is survived by her husband, Duane Mordal; sons, David Mordal, John (Kimberly) Mordal; grandchildren, Michael (Kayla), Katelyn (Chris), Nick (Margaret), Joshua, Rachel (Andrew); great-grandchildren, Mackenzie, Avery, Jaxon, David; sister, Norma; and many nieces, nephews, family and friends.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, June 27, 2026, at 11:00 AM, with visitation one hour prior, at Living Waters Church, 21246 Meadowvale Road NW, Elk River, MN. Burial at Meadowvale Cemetery.
