Fred, age 88, of Elk River, passed away due to complications from lymphoma on August 28, 2023.
Fred was born on October 22, 1934, in Triumph, MN to Fred and Elizabeth (Benda) Temple. As a young boy he assisted his father working in the family mercantile where he developed a strong work ethic and a gift for communicating with others. After graduation from Triumph/Monterey High School in 1952, he attended Mankato State College where he received both his undergraduate and graduate degrees. He also served in the U.S. Army in Germany from 1954 to 1956.
He was united in marriage to Mary McCarrick in Easton, MN on August 5, 1961. Fred dedicated his life to education. He taught English and social studies for ten years in Heron Lake, Frost, and Madelia before accepting a Guidance counseling position at Elk River High School. He retired from that position in 1997 after 29 years.
Fred enjoyed pheasant hunting, fishing, gardening, photography and was an avid reader. He was also a dedicated Minnesota sports fan. He was committed to the community of Elk River and enjoyed volunteering at CAER food shelf, various church activities, and reading to elementary students. He was devoted to his family and will be dearly missed.
Fred is survived by his beloved wife of 62 years, Mary; children: Ann Smith, James (Kimberly) Temple, Kathleen Temple, and Christine (Brian) Ball; grandchildren: Emily, Tyler, Erin, and Elizabeth; great-grandchildren: Alexander, Harmony, Vincent, and Vayda; siblings: Judy McLoone, Joan Temple, Frances Mansager, and John (Janet) Temple; and many nieces, nephews, family and friends.
Fred is preceded in death by his parents Fred and Elizabeth Temple and stepmother, Agnes (Meyers) Temple.
Mass of Christian burial will be held at the Church of St. Andrew (566 4th Street NW, Elk River) at 11:00 am on September 9, 2023 with visitation one hour prior to mass.
Interment St Andrew’s Cemetery in Elk River.
