Eugene Luverne Carlson, of Elk River, Minnesota, formerly of Owatonna, Minnesota and Mitchell, South Dakota, passed away on June 2, 2020, with his wife and daughter by his side. He was 89 years old.
Eugene was preceded in death by his father, Melford Carlson; his mother, Dorothea Layman; his step-mother, Dorothy Carlson; and his sister, Elizabeth (Patrick) Cullen.
He is survived by his brother, Kenneth (Eleanor) Carlson; his wife, Mary Carlson; his children, Eric (Jo Ellen) Carlson, Paul (Elisa) Carlson, John (Dawn) Carlson, and Cynthia (Mark) Bluhm; and his grandchildren, Lara (Martin) Carlson-McGoey, Lucia Carlson, Sarah (Tyler) Carlson-Bradley, Timothy Bluhm, Nicole Carlson, Dennis Carlson, and Kyle Bluhm.
Eugene was born and grew up in St. Paul, Minnesota. He was an Air Force veteran, serving from 1951 to 1954. He graduated from the University of Minnesota-Duluth in 1958 and earned a Master’s Degree from Wichita State University in 1968. Eugene taught Social Studies and Spanish in the Mitchell School District for 30 years before retiring in 1991. He was an avid fisherman and golfer. Over the years, Eugene and Mary took many long driving trips to Texas, Arizona, Missouri, and other places to visit their children and grandchildren. One of his greatest joys was seeing his grandchildren and their dogs.
