Elmer John Telfer, Jr., a beloved husband, father, and friend, passed away peacefully on December 23, 2024. Born on January 16, 1944, in Santa Barbara, California to loving parents who predeceased him, Elmer lived a life marked by service and dedication.
After graduating high school in 1961, John answered his country’s call by enlisting in the U.S. Navy. He served from 1962 to 1968 as a Fire Control Technician aboard the USS Dale, a Guided Missile Frigate.
Following his time in the Navy, John pursued higher education and became a Certified Public Accountant, passing the CPA exam on the first try. He dedicated many years to helping individuals and businesses navigate their financial journeys. Later in life, John became a real estate agent helping people with the dream of finding and owning their own homes.
John was actively engaged with organizations such as the Jaycee’s Club, Lion’s Club International, American Legion Post 112, and Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW). Through these affiliations, he forged lasting friendships while contributing positively to those around him — always ready with a smile and a sarcastic word for anyone who crossed his path.
John was married to the love of his life, Winifred Diane Telfer, for 59 years. During their marriage they shared many adventures, which included rally racing in southern California. Most of all they enjoyed spending time together, whether it was volunteering or taking road trips. Ultimately, they were partners through thick and thin. They raised two sons, Christopher and Bryan Telfer who carry forward their father's legacy.
John is survived by his beloved wife, Winifred Diane Telfer. His two sons, Christopher (Tricia) Telfer and Bryan (Jen) Telfer. His siblings, Robert (Beth Ann) Telfer, Thomas (Susan) Telfer, Patricia (Richard) Intini, and Pamela Doran. He is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews, grandchildren and step-grandchildren.
As we remember Elmer John Telfer, Jr., we celebrate not just what he accomplished in life but how he loved and supported those around him: from family gatherings filled with laughter and sarcasm or evenings spent with him giving his opinions whether solicited or not. John would have given his shirt to a friend or family member in need.
A Celebration of Life will be held on January 18th, 2025, from 3:00 pm to 6:00 pm at the Elk River American Legion, 525 Railroad Drive NW, Elk River, MN 55330, allowing friends near & far an opportunity to come together to honor this remarkable man whose spirit will forever resonate within our hearts — and remind us all about importance living fully each day while lifting others along the way! In place of flowers, please donate to the American Legion Post 112.
