Donald Schmalz Obituary

Donald James Schmalz, age 63, of Monticello, passed away on September 23, 2025 while peacefully surrounded by his loving family. He was preceded in death by his parents, Eloise (Franzmeier) and Loren Schmalz; and brother Gary Schmalz. Donald is survived by his daughter Hillary Schmalz (Jon Valdivia), their son Holden, and another grandson on the way; siblings Jeffrey (Andy) Schmalz, Michael (Meg) Schmalz, Ruth (Ross) Conoryea, and Naomi Schmalz; and several nieces, nephews, other close relatives and many friends.

Donald was a music lover, particularly of live concerts, no matter the kind. He loved it all! He was a generous man and loved to tell stories, jokes, and laugh with people. He will lovingly be remembered as a real trickster! Taking in the sights and scents of nature and fresh air, Donald was able to fish the lakes, hunt the fields, and hike the hills. He was an avid outdoorsman and spent as much time as he could with his family. He eagerly awaited the birth of his second grandson and was saddened to know that he wouldn’t get to see his arrival. We take heart in knowing that he will be there with us in love and spirit when he arrives.

A Celebration of Donald’s life will be held at Riverside Church in Big Lake at 10:00 AM, Saturday, November 29, 2025.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in Donald’s name to the Glioblastoma Foundation through the link below.
