Barbara Middelstadt, age 88 of Elk River passed on February 4, 2024. She was born March 15, 1935 to Ken and Grace Sellon.

Barb’s passions in life were sports, playing cards and games, gardening, and tatting. She enjoyed world travel and square dancing with her husband of 70 years, Ronnie. Barb worked for 28 years as a financial secretary for VandenBerg Junior High.

She is preceded in death by her parents, sister Ardeth Darsow and brother Eugene Sellon.

She will be missed greatly by her husband, Ron; sister Joanne Burdick; sons Jerry (Deb) Middelstadt and Scott (Sarah) Middelstadt; daughter Lori (Brian) Smith; 5 grandchildren Kristan (Mark) Kohls, Becky Anderson, Lindsey Monroe, Grace Middelstadt and Luke Middelstadt; 4 step-grandchildren Aaron (Randi) Smith, Matt Smith, Andy Smith and Amanda (Alex) Gutekunst; 10 great-grandchildren Sam Kohls, Jerry Kohls, Halie Monroe, Ethan Monroe, Kiley Monroe, Rachel Anderson, Audrey Anderson, Ethan Smith, Natalie Smith and Jerry Smith; and many cousins, nieces, nephews and friends.

A celebration of her life will take place at St. John Lutheran Church in Elk River, MN on March 2, 2024. Viewing starts at 10 am with a funeral at 11 am. A light luncheon to follow the services. In lieu of flowers please donate to the Archie & Isabelle Powell Scholarship Fund.

Barb was born in Elk River, MN. She spent the first 8 school years attending District 57. In 9th grade she transferred to Elk River High School. Barb was very athletic and lettered in girl’s sports, excelling in running and softball. She met Ron Middelstadt in high school. They were married on January 1, 1954.

Barb was an avid sports fan and was the left fielder of the 1970 and 1971 Championship Elk River Slo-Pitch Ladies Softball team. Throughout her life Barb was active in her children’s lives by volunteering as a 4H Leader, Cub Scout Den Mother and consistent supporter for all the sports and activities in which her children participated, a tradition she continued with her grandchildren and great grandchildren. Outside of her children’s activities, Barb was also a member of the local Homemaker’s Club and Church Ladies Aid. She loved watching and rooting for the Minnesota Twins. She also enjoyed watching the Vikings, North Stars, Timberwolves and Gophers.

A prominent part of Ron and Barb’s life together was Square Dancing. Barb’s father, Ken, was a caller and Ron learned to dance at the Sellon homestead barn. Square dance camping weekends were a favorite activity for the whole family. After the children had grown, Ron and Barb joined the Hot Foot Stompers and continued to dance locally and across the country. Barb was the club’s Queen in 1991 and Ron and Barb served jointly as the club’s President during the early 1990s.
