Stephen Bryan Schempf

Age 74, died Monday, October 7, 2019, at Guardian Angels Care Center in Elk River. He was born January 31, 1945 in Waukegan, IL to Jerome and Eunice (Helgeson) Schempf. He graduated from Elk River High School and from the University of Minnesota with a B.S. in Zoology. After college, he worked as a lab technician at the University Hospital Heart Center. He married Ann Gaustad in 1967 and soon after moved to Denver, CO. They were later divorced. 

In Denver, Steve pursued his Doctorate in Pathology at the University of Colorado. At the age of 27, he was critically injured in an auto accident. He spent many months in rehab and was later moved back to Minnesota where his parents provided his care.

Steve was a member of Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Elk River. In high school, he played football, basketball and baseball and was athlete of the year 1962-63. Later in life, he liked watching baseball, playing cards and enjoyed a good cup of coffee.

Survivors include two children, Heidi Schempf of Greeley, CO and Nick Schempf of Denver, CO; brothers, Phil Schempf (Janet Hall) of Juneau, AK and Brad Schempf of Ft Collins, CO; an aunt, Phyllis Holtz; three grandchildren, Alek, Daria and Max of Greeley, CO; and many cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents.

A memorial service will be held Monday, Oct. 28 at 11:00 A.M. at Emmanuel Lutheran Church 1506 Main St NW Elk River, MN. with visitation one hour prior. Interment Kimball Cemetery, Kimball, MN.
